The Psychomotor Vigilance Task is the measure sleep researchers reach for first, and it is almost insultingly simple: a timer appears at a random moment, you stop it, and that repeats. What makes it informative is not your quickest response but the ones where you did not keep up — those become more frequent long before you feel any different.   • The gaps are random on purpose

    The wait before each counter is drawn fresh every time, so there is no beat to settle into and nothing to anticipate. Pressing before the counter shows up is recorded as a false start and costs you score — guessing the timing is the one strategy this task is built to catch.

  • Your slowest responses carry the signal

    The score leans on a kind of average that a single very slow response drags down and a single very fast one barely lifts. That is deliberate: dropping from your usual pace for one moment is the thing worth knowing about, and chasing a personal-best single response will not move the number much.

  • Three minutes is long enough to fall off

    On 3 min the interesting part is not the opening. Almost everyone is quick for the first stretch; what varies between people, and between one day and another for the same person, is how well that holds together by the end.

One caveat worth knowing: a change of strategy moves your score for reasons that have nothing to do with attention. Your dashboard reads each session against your own recent ones, so if you adopt something from this list, give it a few sessions before reading anything into the trend.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a plain reaction time test?+

The trial itself is the same idea, but the point is the duration. A reaction time test asks for your quickest response over a handful of tries; this one runs for minutes and reports the responses where you fell behind. Anyone is fast for ten seconds.

Can this tell me how sleep-deprived I am?+

No. Responding more slowly and less evenly is associated with being short on sleep in research settings, but a single session on a website cannot separate that from caffeine, time of day, your keyboard, or simply not caring much on this particular attempt. It reports how you responded, not why.

Is this the same length as the version in research papers?+

The three-minute option follows PVT-B, a short form used in published work, including its one-to-four-second gaps. The standard version runs ten minutes with longer gaps, and the six-minute option here is our own middle ground. None of it is normed against a population, so treat the number as a comparison with your own earlier sessions.

What counts as falling behind?+

Research on the short form treats a response slower than about a third of a second as a lapse, and that is the line used here. It sounds harsh until you play it — most responses land well inside it, which is exactly why the ones that do not stand out.
