The score is about steadiness, not speed
Your reaction times are scored on how consistent they are, not on how fast they get. Drifting off shows up as your timing scattering — sometimes quick, sometimes late — long before it shows up as a mistake. Settling into one rhythm and holding it scores better than pushing.
A missed 3 usually comes right after a fast streak
The taps build a habit, and the habit is what makes stopping hard. When several digits in a row feel effortless, that is exactly when the next 3 slips past. Noticing the streak is the cue to loosen your grip on the key.
Boredom is the task, not a flaw in it
Nothing here is designed to be interesting — a task that did the holding for you would not measure whether you can hold on yourself. On Standard that is 90 trials of the same thing, and staying with it is the whole exercise.
One caveat worth knowing: a change of strategy moves your score for reasons that have nothing to do with attention. Your dashboard reads each session against your own recent ones, so if you adopt something from this list, give it a few sessions before reading anything into the trend.

Why is almost every trial a tap?+
Because the habit is the point. If stopping were common it would stay easy; making it rare (about one trial in nine) is what turns withholding into something that takes effort, and that effort is what the task measures.
Is this the same length as the version in research papers?+
No. The standard version runs 225 trials over roughly four and a half minutes; this one runs 90 on Standard and 180 on Extended. That keeps a session under two minutes, but it also means you should not compare your score here with published figures.
What does the score actually measure?+
Two things together: how well you tell the target digit apart from the rest, and how steady your reaction times are. Steady timing with no missed targets scores highest — being fast on its own does not, because speed here mostly buys you mistakes.
Can this tell me whether I have an attention problem?+
No. This is a practice and self-tracking exercise, not a validated instrument, and a short online version of a research task cannot indicate any condition. If your attention is affecting daily life, that is a conversation for a clinician.
